eo/ir operator simulator

The EO/IR Operator Simulator is a high-fidelity training simulation designed to prepare operators for real-world target acquisition and engagement scenarios. Built on Unreal Engine and running on Linux, this simulator replicates critical functionality of the MX10 Handheld Controller Unit (HCU) and Laser Arming Panel (LAP) devices, providing trainees with realistic hands-on experience in a safe, controlled environment. The system features a Head-Up Display (HUD) rendering both Electro-Optical (EO) and pseudo Infrared (IR) scenes, enabling operators to practice target identification under various visual conditions. With integrated Auto Video Tracker (AVT) and Laser Range Finder (LRF) functionality, precision slew and zoom controls, and focal wheel adjustment, trainees develop the critical skills needed for effective target tracking and engagement.

The simulator provides necessary operational realism including a key training feature of the red “see-spot” indicator that appears on the target rendered in the HUD, accurately correlating with the laser intersection point on the target—giving operators immediate visual feedback on their aim accuracy. Simple session management allows instructors to launch training scenarios from the desktop and terminate sessions using either the ESC key or the Stow button on the physical HCU device. This cost-effective training solution eliminates the need for live-fire exercises while providing operators with repeatable, measurable training experiences that build confidence and competence in mission-critical target acquisition and laser designation tasks.
